The word 'staycation' has been around for a while now. And it's been gaining more and more popularity given that we are finding it tougher to get away for longer holidays. Everyone loves a glamorous hotel room; the inviting decor, the chocolate on your fluffy pillows and the dreamy plush bed – and all these need to, and should, find a life outside the hotel. Inspired by our favourite stays, we've put together a few ideas that will finally let you bring home the five star experience. So indulge yourself and start planning…

Treat yourself to a four-poster
Let's start with the basics – the bed. What better way to begin the five-star experience than with this classical bed style. Whether you opt for a contemporary slim post, or go all out with a traditional solid carved one – nothing says glamorous better than a four-poster, especially if you choose one with a canopy.

Tip:

Drape the bed posts in soft fabrics to bring in the romance and create a cosy mood.

Make a statement with a wow headboard
You can completely transform the look of an ordinary bedroom with the addition of an elegant headboard. For instance, Group DCA creates a sense of grandeur in the space by upcycling a traditional entrance door as a headboard.

Wake up to the outdoors
With a view like that, why would you point your bed towards the TV? Take a cue from this farmhouse on the outskirts of New Delhi, where Kumar Moorthy & Associates takes advantage of the outdoors by designing the bedroom to open up to a private verandah. Imagine enjoying your morning cup of Joe while you take in that view from your very own private deck.

Pimp out your bedside table
The best part about staying in a hotel is that everything is at your fingertips. A great way of doing this is to trick out your bedside table. You can hide away the not-so-glamourous items like your ear-plugs, creams and lotions in the drawer, while you make room on the top for your favourite reads to go with a beautiful lamp and even some fresh flowers. Having all that you treasure, nearby, will always make your bedroom feel extra special.

Sink into fluffy white bed linen
Recreate that comfy hotel bed experience with fluffy, white sheets. Bed linen with at least a 300 thread count should do the trick. And if you want to really splurge, launder your sheets once in a way to get those crisp whites. Now add some vibrant throw pillows to the mix and retire for the night in style.

Set the mood with lighting
Lighting when done well, sets the mood without you even noticing. And hotels have mastered this art. Take a page out of their handbook and set up lamps or sconces on either side of the bed. This will help balance out the room, as well as keep you in bed whilst turning off the lights. Jazz the space up with a floor lamp as well.

Tip: Install dimmers to seamlessly change the energy of the room and create a softer ambience.

Add some shimmer and sheer
Glam up the space with sheer curtains that have a subtle tinge of shimmer. But make sure there is enough layering or black-out blinds, so that you won't wake up at the crack of a dawn.

Make room for a lounge
Usually your hotel room also has a seating area. So if space permits, try fitting in a couch or some tasteful chairs to create a separate seating. This gives the space a super luxe feeling and allows you to sip your morning coffee and read your paper … another reason to stay in the room a bit longer.

Opt for an ottoman
If space constraints don't allow you to have a separate lounge, then why not use a trunk or chaise at the end of your bed? It becomes a great way of squeezing in that extra seat and comes in handy especially when you are trying on shoes or having the nibbles and don't want to worry about crumbs on the bed.

An ensuite to match
A staple of the hotel experience is having a luxurious ensuite bath. If you're lucky enough to have an attached bathroom, then design the space so that it visually complements your boutique bedroom. Give your bathroom the spa-like atmosphere with a tub, plenty of plants and toiletries to pamper yourself.

Showcase your art
During your many hotel stays you'll notice that all rooms incorporate different forms of art. This helps to pull the room together and makes even a plain space come alive. Thus, make your master suite special by boldly showcasing your favourite pieces. Architecture BRIO adds texture and height to this bedroom in Mumbai by framing the bed in a massive, vibrant painting.
